Installation Advice for the FireFly I, II & III Flight Diverter

U.S. Patent Pending

Birds can see in two ranges –visible/ultra-violet. The Firefly was designed to use peak vision ranges of light visible to birds (360nm/560nm wavelengths). A bird’s vision utilizes both light and motion – both components of the Firefly. The angle of light refraction, static or active wind conditions alert approaching birds to divert their flight patterns.

Wind (3+mph):
The rotational speed of the FireFly increases effectiveness. Fixed Models are effective on guy wires owing to direct wind contact to the flapper/wires.

Sun:
The reflective/luminescent properties of the FireFly require maximum sunlight for day and low light/fog effectiveness. A UV Index of 3 or greater is best.

During periods of heavy cloud cover or when the UV Index drops to 1 or less, some birds will challenge the diverters. Tests have shown that when the sun emerges the birds emit an alarm call and are flushed from the roost area.

The Firefly has no ‘halo’ effect and produces an initial light emission of 6 lumens per cubic meter which reduces to 1 lumen PCM 1-2 hours after sunset - similar to moonlight on snow.

Flight Path:
The FIREFLY 1, installed 15’-30’ apart on power lines or cell tower guy wires, etc affects avian vision reducing thereby reducing collisions. The FIREFLY II is dependent upon a similar configuration owing to architectural / environmental distractions. The FIREFLY III is used on fencing and overhead grid systems.

Observe bird flight patterns and install multiple Firefly(s) directly in flight path. The Swivel Bracket and Conduit Swivel increase effectiveness. These brackets can be adapted to almost any environmental/structural condition.

Birds often will challenge the FireFly for 10 days or more. Re-locate FireFly as necessary.
